The Northman knows there is a world below his own, but that so long as he bears witness there is no world above him. The Northman knows that putting ginger in beef jerky is a good idea. The Northman knows art – the Northman knows that art is what happens when he is left alone for a very long time with a camera. The Northman knows his place; he knows that stagnation is transitory, like the stop his bicycle must make when the bridge lifts to allow a barge passage upriver. Where is the barge going? Hasn’t he told you?
The Northman knows the tannin content of his drink. He knows that tannins are polyphenolic organic compounds. The train stops at the definition of polyphenolic. The Northman knows trails where you can not only find a variety of mushrooms, but also find yourself if you’re lucky. Few share a Northman’s luck. The Northman knows which bottle to take – devoid of BPA (incidentally, BPA is phenolic). The Northman knows philosophy – he knows that if more than a hundred people know a philosopher’s name, their work loses all significance. He knows that solipsism is narcissistic. He knows that Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae, the son of Cephissus. That he was beautiful. The Northman knows beauty. He knows that beauty is more than the curve of your waistline, the size of your breasts – that beauty is of the mind, and in the eye of the beholder, and the Northman bears witness. Hasn’t he told you?
