“What are you doing?’ he asked, as his daughter- in- law carefully wrapped the pile of presents next to her, labelling each one before adding it to the spreading pile under the sparkling tree. Although this task was one she loved, it invariably ended with her being half wrapped in sticky tape herself and the edge of the table being adorned with useful small pieces, which folded themselves underneath, never to be used.
“I’m wrapping the children’s presents – and the grown ups’ in a minute when they have gone to the pub,” she said cheerfully, trying to unstick her fingers that had somehow attached themselves to the latest parcel. “Do you want to help?”
