“Hello friend,” spoke the soft voice of the old man. It was a barely audible sound over the rattle and squeal of an arriving Tube train. Angel Street Station was busy even for the usual rush hour morning and a forest of legs, garbed in suit pants, skirts and workman’s jeans marched by. The noise each footfall made on the tiled floor was like an inharmonious drumbeat, its constant rhythm echoed as if a great Biblical storm was hailing down on a tin roof. Occasionally the Tannoy system would blare out across the background din with a harsh high voice like a knife cutting into the earlobes, the words spoken were incomprehensible from low down, seated on the ground in a niche in the platform wall as he was.

“I’m looking for my wife, Marlene Bell. Is there any chance of you being able to tell me whether she’s here?”
The desk attendant stared at the frazzled man for a long moment, blew a bubble of gum, and popped it. “She checked out last night.”
“Do you know where she went?”
“Why the heck would I know? It’s not like we were best friends or anything. She was a guest here.”
The man rested his elbows on the counter and cradled his face in his hands. “You don’t understand—it’s very important that I find her. She’s unstable, confused, and she could be endangering herself or others.”

The sound of dripping water, infiltrating the stifled murk of unconsciousness, began the ascent to awareness.
A herd of overweight, iron-shod, elephants was tap-dancing a ragged routine in his head, long before the scent of mildewed decay, hovering delicately above the stink of stagnant water, finally dragged him into the arena of wakefulness.

“Wake up!” Nicole cried in my ear.
“What?” I asked easing myself and wiping at my sleepy eyes.
“Guess what I heard?” Nicole said grinning.
“What time is it?” I asked her without paying much mind to her question.
“Ugh, Kasey why does that matter? I asked you to guess what I heard. It’s two in the morning.” Nicole huffed. I quirked my eyebrow, and looked back at her blankly.
“Why are you waking me up at two in the morning to guess what the hell you heard?” I asked her.
“You know Heather Nolte, right?” Nicole asked me. I shrugged. Of course I knew who Heather was.
